WPMS Curriculum

Personal and Social Development

This aspect of the curriculum essentially sets up and runs through all the other areas.  It is concerned with nurturing a desire to learn, and a mutual respect for ones-self and for others.

The Montessori method is ideal in helping children develop both personally and socially.  Its teaching methods draw heavily on the concepts of independence and respect for others and for property.

Daily "Circle Time" brings the children together to discuss aspects of their lives and experiences, embracing different cultures and beliefs.  Children become confident in expressing themselves, but always respecting the right of others to voice different views.

A consistent theme through the Montessori classroom is one of order and control.  Children are encouraged to chose their own activities, to share equipment when necessary, and to tidy-up after themselves.

Role play is an important part of a child's development, and although not a strictly Montessori activity, is embraced by WPMS as a means of developing and also having fun!

Mixed age classes are a feature of the Montessori system, encouraging the elder children to assist the younger children in activities and play, thus developing co-operation skills.  Manners and consideration are insisted upon at all times, meaning that tantrums and disruptions are few and far between.
