Mathematical Development

Mathematics is initially introduced by teaching the concepts of quantity, and then moving on to the teaching of the numerical symbols.  Much of the early work draws on the sensorial aspect of teaching, using numbers which can be experienced with senses other than just sight (e.g. the use of sand-paper symbols allows the child to trace the shape of the number with their finger).

Once the concepts of quantity have been grasped and the numerical symbols learnt, the child is able to begin to equate the two.  When ready the concepts of addition and subtraction are introduced, leading to simple sums, and developing into ratios, fractions and sets.

Much of the mathematical teaching uses the practical life equipment to explore the concepts of size, weight, shapes, patterns, position and comparisons, as well as addition and subtraction.

CD-Rom applications are also utilised to vary the teaching methods and thus sustain interest, and to introduce IT as a means of learning.
