Communication, Language and Literacy

In order to develop writing and reading skills we first introduce the phonetic sound and the shape of each letter.  Much of the early work draws on the sensorial aspect of teaching using letters which can be experienced with senses other than just sight (e.g. the use of sand-paper symbols allows the child to trace the shape of the letter with their finger).

When the child is confident with the sounds and shapes of the letters they progress to building and reading words.  The reading of prose and poetry to the children helps to develop their understanding and appreciation of literature, and acts as a source of inspiration.  Regular discussions during Circle Time help develop verbal communication and listening skills.

Emphasis is given to the importance of pencil control, and when a child is ready they begin to learn how to write, initially by tracing dotted letters, progressing to copying, and eventually writing on their own.  Colouring and a variety of art activities further encourage this fine motor control.

The use of computers further develops language and literacy, as well as Maths and Knowledge of the World, through suitable CD-Rom applications, acquainting the children with what has become a vital tool in our communication habits.
